Starting java applications from the Terminal (Mac)

Sometimes it is useful to start a java application from the terminal in order to see debug information that the application is generating.

Let's assume we have a java application "JPSApp.Application.jar" located in a folder named "jpsapp"

#1 Make sure the application is not running (quit, cancel the app)

#2 Open Terminal (Utilities / Terminal)

#3 Type "cd " (cd [space]) in the terminal

#4 Switch to the finder and locate the application's folder (jpsapp)

#5 Select the application's folder in the finder

#6 In the finder, choose edit/copy or command-c to copy the folder (it's path) to the clipboard

#7 Switch back to the terminal and choose edit/paste or command-v ... you should now have something similar to the following in the terminal window

[mb320:~] dspotts% cd /Users/dspotts/desktop/jpsapp

#8 Press enter ([enter]) ... The above command changes the directory (cd) to the folder "/Users/dspotts/desktop/jpsapp"

You should now see something like:

[mb320:jps/_UAs/jpsapp] dspotts%

#9 confirm you are in the correct directory by typing "pwd[enter]" (print working directory) ... This should display something similar to:

/Users/dspotts/__killboy/prdeliver/__dev/jps/_UAs/jpsapp

#10 start the application by typing "java -jar JPSApp.Application.jar"[enter]

The application's debug / console output will now go to the terminal window you used to start the application!

For those of you who may have been wondering what we've been up to over the last year, we've been working on JPS (I know, not a very creative name :-) ) but it's what we've got for the moment.

Many years ago we had a photo applet called JFOTO, but that domain was taken so we settled on JPS for the name, and 129pix.net for the domain (for now).

This app is by far the most complex application we've ever undertaken, incorporating a lifetime of experience with web servers, operating systems, databases, and 20+ years of java software engineering and automation.

Clients for this app are by invitation only at this time, but if you're interested, use the contact form to send us an email.

Java Road Simulator (JRS) 100614

Ever since moving here to East Tennessee and falling in love with the Dragon, I've been wanting to create a dragon game / simulator. Over the years I've worked on it a little bit when I had time, but using Java and Java3D (now included with Mac OS X Snow Leopard), I finally have something that looks like what I've been dreaming about for all these years.

It has a long way to go before it's useful as a game / simulation, but I wanted to share what I have running so far. My goal is to create both a Java3D (Mac OS X, Windows, Linux) and iPhone / iPad versions so that folks can "Master The Dragon" (and have fun becoming familiar with it) from anywhere / at any time. Since Android apps are written in Java, an Android version of the app will be a definite possibility.

Stay tuned for more news as I make some more progress.

On the Killboy Mobile front, we've figured out the version number problem with the App Store, and we've added some additional features (GPX file support for My Maps, as well as a new map we call "Let's Ride" that has many of the roads in the area with GPX-based road segments to show you the start and end of the ride / road) ....

Killboy Mobile Approved!

As you can see from the above screenshot, Killboy Mobile has been approved by Apple and is now on the App Store! (approved in 1 week!)

We are very excited as we have been working very hard on the app and were concerned it might take much longer and/or be rejected. Thanks Apple for your timely review!!!

Killboy Mobile 2.0.12 Submitted to the App Store

We just submitted version 2.0.12 to the app store for review. We believe it is pretty solid, hopefully things will go smoothly and we won't have too many issues this time.

This version is a complete from-the-ground-up makeover compared to version 1.2 and is light-years ahead of that version.

I'll update this post with some more details regarding the new features in this version. You can check out the "learn more" link over to the right to see the latest iFriendly site, demo movie, and features.

After a slight setback with Killboy Mobile v1 (rejected by Apple as a "web clipping"), we've been *really* busy over the last few weeks working on version 2, and I have to say it is looking *really* good ....

Installing Clik2 iPhone AdHoc Distributions v2

#1 Unzip xxx.zip to get SomeApp.app and XXX.mobileprovision

#2 Run iTunes and drag both the above files to the iTunes dock icon (mac), or to the "applications" menu item (windows). If you have a prior release, iTunes will ask if you want to replace ... say yes ...

#3 Make sure syncing applications is checked, attach your device, and Sync. This should install the new version of the app on your device.

#4 Disconnect and run the app

#5 Verify Version Number - go to info/about to verify version number matches the version number you received

Installing Clik2 iPhone AdHoc Distributions

We now distribute AdHoc distributions as a ZIP file....

The zip contains

#1 SomeApp.ipa
#2 AdHocSomeAppYYMMDD.mobileprovision

SomeApp.ipa is an iphone application with icon / artwork in it ...

This is Mac and Windows friendlier .....

Here's what we do to install/test it on our devices:

#1 Unzip xxx.zip so you have the 2 files above

#2 On iphone, delete old "SomeApp" app (if you have one)

#3 On iphone, go to settings, general, Profile .... This is where provisioning profiles are stored on the iphone. Delete all of the ones from us:

- Clik2_Dev_PP.mobileprovision (one we use for development, you won't have this)

- AdHocSomeAppYYMMDD.mobileprovision (older ones we may have given you, you may have this)

NOTE: you may have others that you should NOT delete... only delete ones that you know came from us .... You also may have 1 or more jailbroken MPs (mobile provisions)

#4 Launch iTunes (9.0.1+), go to applications, find the old "SomeApp" app, right/control click, delete, move to trash (if this is your first install you won't have an old "SomeApp" there)

#5 Quit itunes, then relaunch it ...

#6 Select both of the files SomeApp.ipa and AdHocSomeAppYYMMDD.mobileprovision, then drag them to iTunes in the dock (mac) or to iTunes Application menu item (windows) .... SomeApp should now appear in the applications section of iTunes.

#7 Quit itunes and relaunch. Check applications and it should have the SomeApp app listed with a proper icon.

#8 Attach iphone, check that "sync all applications" is checked AND that SomeApp is checked , then sync...

iPhone AdHoc Distribution - .ipa Files

While working with one of my beta testers for the upcoming Killboy App, I discovered that the best way to distribute your iPhone app for AdHoc distribution is as an .ipa file (iphone application).

Here's how to do it:

Create a folder named "working"

Inside that folder create a folder named "Payload" (case sensitive)

Put your MyApp.app directory into the "Payload" folder....

If you want your app to have artwork in itunes, create a 512x512 jpg named "iTunesArtwork" inside the "working" folder....

Note that this file must not have any file extension (use terminal to check) ....

You should have things like this:

working
- iTunesArtwork
- Payload
-- MyApp.app

Now select both the "iTunesArtwork" item and the "Payload" folder .... right-click and choose compress....

This will create a file named "Archive.zip" ... rename this file to "MyApp.ipa" .... You can then distribute your app via AdHoc distribution (you'll still need an AdHoc provisioning profile) ....

iPhone AdHoc Distribution - Installing Via iTunes

The developer of your application will probably provide you with a ZIP file containing 2 items:

#1 SampleAppAdHoc.mobileprovision - this is a provisioning profile that allows the AdHoc application(s) to run on your device. This file is keyed to your UDID (Unique Device ID).

#2 SampleApp - this is the actual application that you will be able to run on your iPhone.

Once you have the zip file, uncompress it to find the above 2 items.

Next:

#1 Launch iTunes

#2 Drag both the .mobileprovision file and the app file to the iTunes icon in the dock. The application should now show up in your "Applications" list, tho it may have a generic application icon.

#3 Connect the device you want to install the application on (Note this must be the same device(s) (UDIDs) that you submitted to the developer.

#4 Be sure you have iTunes set to sync Applications, and perform a Sync

When the sync has completed, you should now be able to run the application on your iPhone!

iPhone AdHoc Distribution - Get Your UDID To The Developer

AdHoc Distribution allows iPhone developers to release beta / prerelease versions of their iPhone apps to beta testers, friends, etc. before going live on the App Store.

Here's How

#1 Go the app store and search for "adhoc helper" or an application named "UDID" or use this iTunes Link

#2 Download / install the app (free app)

#3 Run the app, which will retrieve your device's UDID (Unique Device ID), and enter the developer's email address to email your device's UDID to the developer.

The developer will then create a special release version of the app, which you'll be able to download and install using iTunes (instructions coming soon).

I'm not sure about anyone else, but I find myself debating about where to put my updates ... This blog, facebook, twitter, or the dozens of other options that are out there on the web.

It's interesting that more than 10 years ago I pioneered what I termed "dynamic content" ... It was a vision where web sites would not be based on static html, but be dynamically and easily updated by both the authors and their visitors.

Facebook seems to be the current hot item, mostly because it is so simple to use. Connecting with friends, family, and many people you haven't seen in years couldn't be much easier.

I have so many older, out-dated websites, which I may be redirecting here, or at least provide visitors the option to view the old website. I find myself occasionally needing to access these sites for reference, so that's probably the solution I'll use.

As the "Automation Evangelist" that I am, I'll be working on some solutions to some of these problems, both of my own and from others.

Welcome to the new blogger-powered version of our site. I've been pretty busy shooting for Killboy for most of the season, but am looking forward to the winter so I can get the many iPhone apps and other projects I've been developing online. Using blogger in combination with several other technologies will allow us to keep you up-to-date with what's happening with Clik2.
